Phone Banks, Canvassing, Postcards: A First-Timer's Guide to Volunteering

What each kind of campaign volunteering actually involves, which one fits you, and how to have an impact in your first week.

Campaigns run on volunteers, but nobody tells you what the jobs are actually like. Here's the honest version, so you can pick one and start this week.

Phone banking

What it is: Calling voters from a script — usually through a web dialer that connects calls for you, from home.

What it's really like: Most calls go to voicemail. Of the people who answer, most are polite and brief. One or two conversations per shift feel genuinely meaningful. Training happens at the start of every session, and nobody expects you to be smooth on day one.

Best for: People short on time, far from swing districts, or uncomfortable knocking on doors. Two hours on a weeknight is a real contribution.

Canvassing (door knocking)

What it is: Walking a list of specific doors — not every house — with an app that tells you who lives there and what to ask.

What it's really like: It's the highest-impact voter contact there is, by a wide margin in the research. Most doors don't open; the conversations you do have are warmer than you expect, because you're usually talking to voters your campaign already thinks are persuadable or need a nudge to turn out.

Best for: People who live in or near a competitive district and can spare a weekend afternoon. Bring water and comfortable shoes.

Postcards and letters

What it is: Handwriting short messages to targeted voters — organizations like Vote Forward and Postcards to Voters supply addresses, templates, and timing.

What it's really like: Meditative. You can do it from your couch, on your schedule, with friends. The measured turnout effect is small per letter but real, and it scales with volume.

Best for: Anyone. It's the lowest-barrier entry point in politics, and a good gateway to the rest of this list.

Relational organizing (the one campaigns want most)

What it is: Talking to people who already know you — friends, family, group chats — about registering and voting.

Why it matters: A text from you outperforms every stranger-contact tactic ever measured. Campaigns now run apps (Reach, Empower) that make it structured, but the informal version works too.

How to actually start

  1. Pick a race — your district if it's competitive, an adopted one if not (Swing Left and Sister District match you).
  2. Sign up for one shift, not a commitment. Every campaign is built around first-timers.
  3. Go back once. The second shift is where it stops feeling awkward and starts feeling like a team.
